Here’s a creative one.  ibeatyou, or IBY for short, is a website focused on attracting those with a competitive edge.  The platform is setup so people can start their own competition, and compete with others from across the world.  You can choose to keep your competitions private if you aren’t willing to let the whole world see.

After my brief exploration of the site, I found competitions taking place such as a staring contest, a dance battle, scariest face, and signing contests.  By no means is the site limited to these types of competitions, but that’s what makes up the majority.  Some competitions are able to get quite a few views, while others are barely noticed.

I’m not sure how well a site like this can do, but it is a bit more on the creative side.  There are so many social networking type sites popping up everyday, it’s almost hit or miss when it comes to popularity.  With that said, if you are a bit curious, check out ibeatyou and see what kind of competitions are a grabbing people’s attention.  The least bit you can do is gather some ideas of what’s popular and what’s not.

If you are a Star Wars fanatic like me, you might find this interesting.  Serious die hard fans of Star Wars may even be quite familiar with this.  If you hate Star Wars and despise anything to do with Star Wars, feel free to move along.  Now, to the good stuff.

AtomFilms is once again having their Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge taking place.  If you enjoy making movies, and enjoy Star Wars, this is for you.  Even if you enjoy watching movie clips and parodies.  Winners of the challenge will have their short film shown on Spike TV.  George Lucas himself picks his personal favorite submission for one of the awards, while fans worldwide can pick their favorite for the Audience Award.  The deadline for the 2008 contest is on May 27th.  Winners of the challenge will be announced by Lucasfilm at this year’s Comic Con in San Diego California.

There have been some really crazy entries in the past, but most end up being pretty funny. You better act fast if you have interest in participating in the 2008 Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge.  To learn more about all the details for this year’s challenge, visit the official AtomFilms website.

FilmakaI advise independent filmmakers to become familiar with Filmaka, an independent web based movie project. The website has been in beta, but has now moved to the next level, attracting a bit of interest. Founders of the website are looking for undiscovered new talent including television producers and indie filmmakers, giving them the opportunity to showcase their work and possibly obtain both network and studio deals.

Filmaka has several contests in place that are sure to spark interest. Currently they sponsor a competition that has gives the winner an opportunity to shoot a pilot for the FX channel. This certainly fits the web site’s slogan, “rewarding creativity”. If making films is your thing, cruise on over to Filmaka and learn more about the opportunities that await you.

Bookhabit.com is a website dedicated to uniting both readers and writers. If you are a writer who has been already discovered, or perhaps someone who is completely new and undiscovered, a visit to Bookhabit.com might spark your interest. The website serves as a platform where writers can share and promote their books and increase popularity with interested readers.

There is no charge for authors to list their books online, and each writer receives 40% from a sale. There is a set pricing structure in place, and begins with the book being listed at $2.50. The first 20 books are sold at that price, increasing to $3 for the next 21-50 sold, etc. The help page shows the complete pricing structure if you are interested in learning more about the whole sale process.

Just about every category is available, from adventure, childrens, drama, science fiction, and more. Not only does the site provide a decent opportunity for new and undiscovered authors, individuals who enjoy reading can be entertained by different, new and affordable books.

Bookhabit.com is also currently running a three round Unpublished Competition which offers a $5000 prize. The winner of the competition will be able to retain copyright, which is a nice plus. Complete details about the competition can be found at the official Book Habit contest page.
